The unit develops internationally active scholars in political science and economics who challenge global-scale social issues and propose evidence-based solutions by designing government policies and political/economic institutions. These scholars share common analytical tools such as game theory, experimental methods, and big data analysis. Positive/Empirical Analysis of Political Economy ACCOMPLISHMENTS 1 In 2020, the University of Essex and the School of Political Science and Economics began operating a Consecutive Degree Program Following the success of the Summer School of Political Science Methodology sponsored by our unit, hosted by University of Essex, and held at Waseda University since 2016, the two universities held discussions. As a result, the School of Political Science and Economics (SPSE) and the University of Essex began operating the Essex 3+1 CDP, which is a 4 year (or 4.5 for Japanese Degree Program (JDP) students) consecutive degree program for bachelor’s and master’s degrees in 2020. Students nominated by SPSE and accepted by Essex will be able to obtain consecutive degrees by spending 1 year in Essex after 3 years (or 3.5 for JDP students) of study in SPSE. Every year, 5 students from SPSE are nominated. In March 2023, the Department of Government was added to the existing Department of Economics as a faculty that can send students to the University of Essex. By expanding the number of faculties eligible for sending students, the number of international students sent to study abroad and the range of studies and opportunities for students to specialize in increased. The University of Essex is consistently ranked high in the QS rankings in the subject of Politics. (48th in 2021 and 50th in 2022). 2 Strengthening Relations Between the Department of Economics, École Polytechnique and the Graduate School of Economics, Waseda University Since 2018, Dr. Yukio Koriyama, Professor of Economics, École Polytechnique has been continuously welcomed as a visiting faculty member in the Positive/Empirical Analysis of Political Economy Unit, Waseda University Top Global University Project, and offered regular courses such as “Game Theory and its Application to Economics” and “Market and Institutional Design”. In addition, from 2022, doctoral students have been sent to a laboratory at the École Polytechnique to receive instruction in international education and research, along with thesis guidance. As a result of these continued efforts, the relationship between the two schools strengthened and the Graduate School of Economics and the Department of Economics at the École Polytechnique were able to proceed with a Departmental Agreement including ENSAE (a joint research unit with Polytechnique and an organisation specializing in statistics and economics, included in CREST: Centre for Research in Economics and Statistics, a leading French scientific organization) 3 Advertising in the Prestigious International Journals “Science” and “Nature” In September 2020, an interview with Professor Noguchi, the former Unit Director, was published in the academic journal “Science”, introducing the research fields of the Unit, such as global health. In March 2022, an advertisement was published in “Nature” featuring core unit member Professor Arimura’s work on carbon pricing and showcasing Waseda's carbon neutral initiatives domestically and internationally, as well as promoting the TGU project activities of the Unit. As a result, the number of page views soared immediately after the publication of the advertisement. In total, more than 2,000 users from more than 35 countries across all continents visited the site.As both journals are internationally prestigious, the articles contributed to the Unit's goal of "improving our global ranking as a unit for education and research in political economy" by disseminating the Unit's activities around the world, despite being in the midst of the Coronavirus pandemic. 4 A Fundamental Shift in Political Science Methodology Education for the Era of Democratization of Data Since 2019, the Unit has continued to provide intensive summer lectures by Professor Teppei Yamamoto (Department of Political Science, Massachusetts Institute of Technology), giving students the opportunity to learn statistical causal inference systematically and regularly from Professor Yamamoto, who is internationally recognized in the field of political science methodology. At the same time, Professor Yamamoto and Waseda University faculty have been discussing future collaboration, and Professor Yamamoto's argument is that the overwhelming majority of data in data science in the era of data democratization is about society, which requires a person trained in social science, and that political science methodology is the best way to systematically engage in such education. Based on this idea, the Graduate School of Political Science at Waseda University plans to reform its methodological education in line with this image from FY2024 onward. While respecting the three pillars of political science methodology (normative, formal, and empirical) as traditions, the school intends to transform the empirical education into something new and relevant to the era of democratization of data. 5 Various Projects to Improve the Unit's Reputation The Positive/Empirical Analysis of Political Economy Unit invited more than 10 JA/visiting faculty members from renowned overseas universities every year to deliver regular courses, held 15 to 20 international events every year including seminars and workshops by visiting faculty members from overseas, and hosted the Essex University Summer School (ESS) on the Waseda Campus every year since 2016 (online in 2020 and 2021).ESS delivers intensive lectures and exercises in English. These continuous relationships with renowned overseas universities have contributed to improving the Unit's reputation. The following is a report of the symposium. What Can Positive/Empirical Analysis of Political Economy Do for Society? [PDF] MOVING FORWARD Maintain and develop an international education and research system by inviting JA and visiting faculty Since Positive/Empirical Analysis of Political Economy Unit has been successful in recruiting top-level researchers, the Graduate School Office will take the initiative in inviting researchers, as the Center has done in the past. We will invite an average of at least 3 visiting faculty members per year from AY2024-2026. A Fundamental Shift in Political Science Methodology Education for the Era of Democratization of Data Professor Yamamoto (MIT) and Waseda University faculty have been discussing future collaboration, and Professor Yamamoto's argument is that the overwhelming majority of data in data science in the era of data democratization is data about society, which requires a person trained in social science, and that political science methodology is the best way to systematically engage in such education.Based on this idea, the Graduate School of Political Science at Waseda University plans to reform its methodological education in line with this image from AY2024 onward.
