But when I first began attending Waseda, the bright-red logo and bright-minded bilingual members of TEDxWasedaU stood out to me. Where I’m from in the United States, none of the schools I attended had any circles or clubs that were affiliated with the TED or TEDx communities. Sure, most of us were familiar with the famous TED(x) Talks on YouTube, but to think that students like us could not only participate but organize talks like the ones we watched in class never crossed my mind, until I discovered TEDxWasedaU. For those who may not be familiar with them, TED Talks provide a platform for anyone who has an “idea worth spreading,” which is the famous slogan affiliated with the non-profit organization. These ideas influence and educate the audience about a variety of topics, from discussing the effects of increased population density in urban cities to erasing the stigma behind online education. The difference between TED and TEDx Talks is that TEDx Talks are independently organized under license from the TED organization.  The Application Process When I first applied to become a member of TEDxWasedaU, I was undoubtedly nervous. It was my first year at university, and I was joining my first circle where I was about to meet and work closely with 51 hard-working and motivated students. I tried to reassure myself that all of the extracurricular activities and school clubs I joined in high school were training me for this moment, and while that was partially true, experiencing university clubs was a whole new playing field in and of itself. The two biggest differences I noticed from the high school clubs were the level of professionality and attention to detail. There are two stages when applying to be a member of TEDxWasedaU: the application form and the interview. Pass both, and you’re officially a member! Typically, you’re interviewed by the respective leader(s) of the team you want to be a part of. There are four core teams you can apply to–Design, Speaker, Finance, and Marketing–and a supplemental team that can only be joined once you’re a part of either the Design or Marketing Teams: Production. And, last but certainly not least, we have our wonderful President and Vice President who overlook all teams and assure a smooth-sailing teamwork experience, though these positions are not open for prospective members. Correcting Some Misperceptions While most teams are self-explanatory, there are some misperceptions floating around. The most common one, for example, relates to the Speaker Team. While it may sound like this is the team that actually does the TED-talking (hence its name “Speaker” Team), it actually doesn’t. Instead, the Speaker Team has the privilege of recruiting and consulting with hand-picked guest speakers (this is where the team name comes in) for our main event of the year, which is held around late June. The Speaker Team is also responsible for brainstorming the annual theme that is the foundation for deciding our main event speakers.  Another common misconception is about our Finance Team. Again, the name may lead you to think that it calculates all of the financial relationships behind the construction of our events. And while this is true, of course, it’s not all that the team does; the Finance Team is also responsible for securing our sponsors and most importantly, the venue, for not only our main event but also for our Student Speaker Competition (SSC), which is typically held throughout the fall semester from October until January.  Then, of course, we have our hardworking Design Team, who turns creativity into visual reality; the Marketing Team, who continues to expand our connections and publicity through witty, trending skits and informative talks (including our podcast, TEDxplain, which is accessible on Spotify!); and the Production Team, who ensures every minute detail is perfectly executed for SSC and our main event. Each team’s specific roles combine to create the incredibly hardworking and diligent community that is TEDxWasedaU. Because of the size and intensity of the main event, all teams work tirelessly year-round to successfully execute their responsibilities. With weekly team meetings and bi-annual general meetings (yes, even during the breaks), our members form close relationships with one another as we assemble and analyze each task behind curating such large events. We make unforgettable memories as we bond through our experiences and stories as fellow Waseda University students. Our first general meeting of this year. After the meeting, we exchanged gifts to celebrate the winter holidays! Applications Open in April & From September-October If this community seems appealing to you and what you have to offer, we’re actually opening applications (exclusively for the Speaker Team) in April! But our official recruitment season is at the beginning of the fall semester from September to October. All teams will open up positions for recruitment online on our Instagram, @tedxwasedau, and on our website, and you can discover which team feels like the best fit for you! We also participate in the annual Waseda-Sai with a booth of our own, so we hope to see you there!  Our members volunteering at Waseda-Sai! In 2023 we handed out temporary tattoos and surveyed people on what type of TEDx Talk they would like to see. The Student Speaker Competition If you want to become part of a community such as TEDxWasedaU but would rather show your potential by contributing your own TEDx Talk, you can look into our Student Speaker Competition. While you wouldn’t be an official member of TEDxWasedaU, you could still experience the TED community and work ethic that comes with building a professional speech for a real-world audience. SSC is exclusively for university students across Japan, and there are two opportunities in the fall semester for competitors to pitch their ideas to our members. The first pitch, typically held in November, will narrow down the competitors to six finalists for the second pitch, which is held in January. These six students will receive guidance from our Speaker Team members to help improve and polish their speeches for the final pitch. At the second and final pitch, the TEDxWasedaU members will declare two winners as those who showed the most potential in expressing their “ideas worth spreading.” The two winners will then hold their TEDx Talk alongside professionals and career-driven guest speakers at the main event in the summer.  One of our SSC winners from this year’s competition talking about the importance of intergenerational connection at the second pitch. Throughout the entire process of corresponding with speakers, promoting our events, and organizing meetings, the inspiration and motivation behind creating platforms for presenters to speak on what they’re passionate about reinforces the purpose behind TEDxWasedaU. The drive to only provide the best for the audience and the speakers through well-planned teamwork radiates in every one of our members, and it’s something I heavily admire about this circle; we all have one goal, and that is to spread awareness and create change together. My involvement in this circle only further helps me to realize the beauty in the collaboration and expression of minds and words. I say with full confidence that being involved in TEDxWasedaU will be a core memory of my university experience.  *This article was written by the following Student Contributor:  Maika Kinoshita Nebgen School of International Liberal Studies Links TEDxWasedaU Related Articles SILS 20th Anniversary Celebrations International Symposium: Understanding Human Rights of Stateless People in the Real-life Context in the Asia-Pacific May 15, 2024 Press Release : Research : Sports : Longer Sprint Intervals Can Improve Muscle Oxygen Utilization Compared to Shorter Intervals May 15, 2024 Alumni : Campus Scenes : Education : Students : Video : Waseda: A year in review 2023-2024 (Video) May 15, 2024 Virtual Campus Tour Waseda Campus Toyama Campus Nishiwaseda Campus Tokorozawa Campus Social Media Instagram facebook X youtube LinkedIn Giving Your generosity can make a difference and bring rippling impact No matter the size, every single gift will make a difference in helping students afford an academic experience that will transform their lives, as well as promoting frontline research to resolve complex challenges of the world today.
